Mary Kay Letourneau: the teacher who was convicted of abusing her student and years later ended up marrying him.

Mary Kay Letourneau was 34 years old, married, the mother of four children, and worked as a teacher at a school in the Seattle area. Vili Fualaau was just 12 years old and was one of her students.

What happened between them eventually became one of the most highly publicized criminal cases in the United States during the 1990s.

The story took on an even greater dimension when it was discovered that Letourneau was pregnant. But that was only the beginning.

Letourneau had known Fualaau since he was even younger, as he had previously been one of her students. Over the years, she remained in contact with him, and in 1996, when he returned to her classroom as a sixth-grade student, the relationship changed.

According to the historical court record, Letourneau began having sexual relations with Fualaau when he was 12 years old. She was 34.

In June 1996, they were even found together at night inside the teacher’s van. At the time, both denied that anything inappropriate was taking place.

Months later, Letourneau was pregnant, and the case finally came to light after Mary Kay’s husband discovered letters she had written to the minor.

The situation reached the authorities and, on March 4, 1997, Letourneau was arrested on charges of second-degree rape of a child.

Her first daughter with Fualaau was born in May of that same year.

In August 1997, Letourneau pleaded guilty to two counts of child rape. She received a sentence of seven and a half years, although initially much of the sentence was suspended under strict conditions: she had to receive treatment and was not allowed to have contact with Fualaau again.

The opportunity lasted only a short time.

She saw him again and ended up back in prison. After temporarily regaining her freedom, Letourneau violated the court order and resumed contact with Fualaau.

In February 1998, she was once again found with him inside a car. Authorities also found thousands of dollars in cash, baby clothes, and a passport, items that led prosecutors to suspect that she may have been preparing to leave the area.

This time, the court ordered her to serve the remainder of her sentence. There was also another detail: Letourneau was pregnant again.

Her second daughter with Fualaau was born in October 1998. He was 15 years old at the time. One of the reasons the case continued to generate so much debate was that Letourneau never publicly accepted the interpretation of events upheld by the justice system.

She described Fualaau as her “soulmate” and maintained that the two shared a romantic relationship.

The American justice system, however, treated what happened as what it legally was: abuse of a minor who was not old enough to consent to that type of relationship.

The case also sparked a debate over the way the media discussed crimes when the adult involved was a woman. Some journalists at the time even acknowledged that the coverage would likely have been very different if the case had involved an adult male teacher and a 12-year-old girl.

He waited for her until she was released from prison

Letourneau remained incarcerated for years and was finally released from prison on August 4, 2004.

Fualaau was now 21 years old. Within hours of her release, his attorneys began trying to have the legal restriction preventing the two from having contact removed.

Soon afterward, they publicly resumed their relationship. And something happened that once again put the case in headlines around the world.

In May 2005, Mary Kay Letourneau, then 43, and Vili Fualaau, 22, were married in a ceremony held in Washington.

The woman who had spent years in prison for abusing him when he was a child was now legally his wife.

The marriage lasted more than a decade

The couple raised together the two daughters they had during the years surrounding the scandal. However, the marriage did not last forever.

Fualaau filed for separation in 2017, and the divorce was finalized in 2019. Later reports indicated that during those years there were also financial difficulties and emotional problems stemming from a history that never completely stopped following them.

Even after separating, the two remained in contact.

Mary Kay was diagnosed with cancer. She died on July 6, 2020, at the age of 58. According to accounts published afterward, Fualaau stayed by her side during the final months of her illness and was with other family members when she died.

Her death closed one of the most controversial chapters in American media culture of the late 20th century.

Decades later, Hollywood revisited the case

In 2023, May December, starring Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman, was released.

The film does not literally tell the story of Mary Kay Letourneau, but its screenwriter, Samy Burch, acknowledged that the case served as one of the main inspirations for the story.

The similarities are clear: an adult woman has a relationship with a minor, serves a prison sentence, later marries him, and years afterward the two attempt to live an apparently normal life under the weight of their past.

Fualaau, however, publicly criticized the production, saying that no one had consulted him and that he felt offended by the way an experience he had actually lived through was once again turned into entertainment.

Nearly thirty years after the case first appeared in the headlines, perhaps that remains one of the most difficult aspects to understand from the outside: behind the scandal that filled front pages for years was a 12-year-old boy whose life was inevitably shaped by a relationship with an adult woman who also held a position of authority over him.
