Pancreatic cancer is considered one of the most silent and aggressive tumors. Unlike other types of cancer, its early signs are often subtle, which delays diagnosis and reduces treatment options.

However, the body does send warnings. Recognizing them early can make a big difference.

What does the pancreas do and why is it important?

The pancreas is an organ located behind the stomach that performs vital functions such as producing digestive enzymes, regulating blood sugar through insulin, and participating in the metabolism of fats and proteins.

When this organ is affected, symptoms can be mistaken for common digestive problems.

Main early signs of pancreatic cancer

1. Persistent abdominal pain that radiates to the back
This is one of the most common signs. The discomfort is located in the upper abdomen and may spread to the back. It often worsens after eating, and many people confuse it with gastritis or muscle pain.

2. Unexplained weight loss
Unexpected weight loss can be an important sign. It occurs even without changes in diet and may be accompanied by weakness. It is often related to poor nutrient absorption.

3. Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)
This symptom appears when the tumor blocks the flow of bile. It includes yellowing of the skin and eyes, dark urine, pale stools, and itchy skin. It is one of the clearest signs, but it does not always appear early.

4. Persistent digestive changes
The pancreas may not produce enough enzymes, affecting digestion and causing frequent nausea, a feeling of fullness quickly, greasy or floating stools, and loss of appetite.

5. Newly diagnosed diabetes
In some cases, pancreatic cancer affects insulin production, leading to a recent diagnosis without an obvious cause, especially in older adults. It can be a lesser-known early sign.

6. Constant fatigue
Extreme tiredness may appear even with little effort, along with persistent lack of energy and a general feeling of weakness.

7. Changes in stool
Changes in stool may indicate problems with fat digestion. If you notice pale, greasy stools with a strong odor, it is important to see a doctor.

Risk factors that increase the probabilities oh having pancreatic cancer

– Smoking
– Obesity
– Diabetes
– Chronic pancreatitis
– Family history

You should seek medical attention if you experience symptoms lasting more than 2 weeks, a combination of several of the signs mentioned, or progressive worsening.

Early diagnosis may include tests such as:
– Abdominal ultrasound
– CT scan
– MRI
– Blood tests

Pancreatic cancer does not always show obvious signs at first, but it does leave clues. Persistent abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss, digestive changes, or jaundice should not be ignored.
